Projector Shelf

Blimey, I actually got around to doing it.

Since I've got my projector, and to be honest really from when I was *thinking* about getting the projector, I've wanted to ceiling mount it. It's just so much less hassle than having to set the thing up on a chair / table / pile o' books, it's less susceptible to being knocked over, and it's easier to get the keystone correct.

And now I've actually managed to do it - and better yet, I've even got permission from the landlord to put the screws into the wall! :-O

Photos attached. Grin. Going to watch an episode of Scrubs.

Back in Cambridge

Back in Cambridge now after a week and a bit in Kent.

PodHouse still seems to be in one piece, which is good, and is gradually warming up again, which is also good.

More amazingly, my USB->Serial cable, which I'd pretty much given up hope of ever arriving, actually turned up while I was away. *Faith in eBay restored*

*Cough* *Splutter*

So, currently in the huge (4000 people) auditorium at Tech Ed, and Microsoft have gone for the exceptionally cool idea of having artists spray paint artwork live on stage during the run-up to the keynote speech.

Unfortunately they don't seem to have considered the concept of ventilation, and so at the moment we're mainly engulfed in solvent fumes, what with being about three rows back from the front.

Maybe it's all a cunning ploy to get us stoned so we accept the marketting stuff we're going to get told shortly?

Anywherever back online

... after a short (an hour and a half) period of downtime for a database upgrade.

Hopefully this didn't cause anyone too much pain :-)

Back in Cambridge

Back in Cambridge again.

I would also like to point out that in the event of red wine spillages, whilst adding salt is a good idea, it also requires that you do get as far as vacuuming it up again afterwards, or you just end up with a red AND salty bit of carpet...

And Firefox's dictionary apparently doesn't recognise either its own name, or the word vacuuming.

Nearly time to head back north

Only one day left before I'm back in Cam - and still lots to play with!

Well, it's been a fun - and full - week of a fairly large assortment of stuff including, in roughly the right order:

1) Scouts' Race Night. the annual fund-raiser for the local Explorer Scout unit, consisting of an evening of projected horse races and bets placed on said races. Good fun technically, and raised over £400, which is even better. Also, there was cheese left over. This is *never* a bad thing.

2) Car MOT'd. Indicators fixed beforehand, or at least the relay prodded until they started flashing again, which still seems to be OK. It would've failed on a couple of bits (rear brake compensator seized and fuel filter loose), but thankfully the garage I took it to are decent people, and so they fixed both of them for me then and there (for free).

3) Radio - computer audio interface box built. Well, nearly. The audio bit of it works nicely, but the transmit control gets upset with the amount of RF floating around at tends to lock up.

4) Some junk cleared out: one 21" monitor given away, a 17" and a 15" dumped, as were two old desktops and a couple of inkjet printers.

5) Big Comparison Of Projectors: the local radio club is looking at buying a projector at the moment, so we set an assortment (six, I think) of them up side-by-side to compare. After some tweaking, all of the budget (~£250) ones performed similarly, though the zoom ratios were significantly different. A mid-range Epson (~£400) was a definite improvement, though not by orders of magnitude. The high-end 4000 lumen £1400 model was a bit brighter, but only marginally, and definitely wasn't worth six times as much as mine :-).

6) Shed (nearly, at time of writing this) re-roofed. This shouldn't have taken as long as it has, but unfortunately the previous roofing felt hadn't been put on too well, and had been left on a bit too long, so some of the soft wood underneath had gone rotten. One of the bits of cedar had gone a bit squishy as well, so we've replaced that too. Hopefully this bit will be finished by tomorrow evening...

So there we go. A random assortment of photos attached.

Back in Kent

... for a few days holiday. Not getting up until 0900 in the morning is amazingly nice compared to the usual 0700 :-)
